Although watercolour has always been my favourite method of painting, I have tried most other types of media and was both surprised and delighted to discover silk painting some twelve years ago. I have always been interested in pattern and first tried painting on silk whilst studying surface pattern design and textiles. I was immediately hooked by the endless design possibilities which the medium offered.
My style is mainly based on the 'resist' method of silk painting - this simply means creating a barrier or resist which blocks the fibres of the silk and contains the spread of the paint. I use clear, black and metallic resists these are known as guttas or outliners. Sometimes I use the resist to 'draw' my design onto the silk and sometimes I apply it as a decoration after painting.
There are many excellent books on silk painting which will explain the process in greater detail. For beginners, I can recommend 'The Silk Painting Workshop' by Jane Venables, and 'Beginner's Guide to Silk Painting' by Mandy Southan.
I enjoy painting many different subjects but flowers are my speciality. I find they are ideal subjects for the brilliant, luminous colours of the dyes.
